Immigrant Policy Inclusion Index

How inclusive each state’s policies are toward immigrants, across seven domains: health coverage, language access, higher education, identification, integration & licensure, legal protection, and economic inclusion. Darker green = more inclusive; orange/red = more restrictive or limited. Click any state for its full profile.

Immigrant–Native Disparity Index

Standardized gaps between foreign-born and US-born residents (uninsured, crowded housing, rent burden, education, home internet, vehicle access, homeownership) from US Census ACS. Green = smaller gaps; red = larger gaps. This is an outcome measure, separate from the Policy map: it describes how immigrant and US-born residents differ, and is shaped by who has immigrated where (recency and composition), not by state policy alone. Oasis Legal Services is a nonprofit organization in Berkeley, California that serves immigrants and refugees.

Oasis Legal Services provides immigration legal representation (asylum, residency, family petitions), naturalization help, and policy advocacy for low-income LGBTQ+ immigrants who have survived violence and persecution.

Mission

Oasis's LGBTQIA+ Asylum Program is the core of our work. In 2023, despite the continued delays in processing of asylum applications, Oasis screened over 300 LGBTQIA+ immigrants for asylum. We represented 177 new asylum seekers and continued legal representation for the more than 900 asylum seekers whose cases are currently pending. 6 clients were granted asylum. The remaining cases are still pending. Our case approval rate is 99%. Permanent residency is the next important step toward citizenship for those who win asylum. In 2023 Oasis assisted 71 new LGBTQ+ immigrants seeking Lawful Permanent Residency. A total of 189 Oasis clients were granted residency in 2023.
